Drugs

There are plenty of topical (applied to the scalp) and oral remedies promoted on the internet.

Only two have been scientifically proven to halt and in some instances reverse hair loss. These are finasteride (marketed as Propecia amongst other names) and minoxidil (marketed as either Rogaine or Regaine). With finasteride about 90% find their hair loss stops and about 50% experience some regrowth*. With minoxidil about 50% of patients find their hair loss stops**.

It is common for these to be used together but to obtain these legally in the UK a prescription is required. A typical year's course of these drugs is about £1000. The effects disappear within 6-12 months of finishing a course so ongoing treatment is necessary.

Surgical Transplants

A variety of methods exist to take donor hair from the sides and back of your scalp and place them in the thinning areas. The best surgeons will do this one hair at a time and create a natural hair line. The worst will take plugs of several hairs at a time leaving the patient with a 'doll's head' appearance. It is also possible to be left permanently scarred from the extraction process. It is essential to research and choose the best possible surgeon. The typical cost is around £5000 and will be more if more than one session is required.
